MuttShack Animal Rescue Foundation
The MuttShack Animal Rescue Foundation is a volunteer driven, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded animals. The Foundation's primary mission is to protect the lives of animals threatened by natural disaster. MuttShack's volunteers (MuttShackers) responded to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina by establishing the only fully equipped triage, rescue and shelter facility in the city of New Orleans . With no running water or electricity and scant resources, MuttShackers rescued and provided critical care for over 3,000 animals.
MuttShack has dedicated its resources to ensuring that what happened in New Orleans and the surrounding area never happens again. In doing so, they now have a contract in place (the first of its kind) with the State of Louisiana to ensure that at least 12,000 animals are safely evacuated with their owners before a severe storm ever hits.
In preparation for the 2007 Hurricane Season, MuttShack has 60 special temperature controlled tractor-trailers and 20 cargo vans dedicated to the Gulf region. In addition, MuttShack aims to assemble the largest fleet of civilian emergency response and evacuation vehicles in the country to deploy at a moment's notice whenever and wherever they are needed.

Nanette Martin, Disaster Photographer
Nanette Martin has been capturing award-winning images for more than 20 years. She is well established in the magazine and newspaper industries, with work published in LIFE, People, Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest, the Advocate and the San Diego Reader. Nanette is known for the powerful images she captures in the aftermaths of disasters, such as the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, the deadly 2003 Cedar Fire in San Diego County and New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
As an animal lover, Nanette focuses much of her attention on documenting the plight of animals affected by disaster. Nanette used her work to raise over $10,000 to feed the search and rescue dogs at Ground Zero, and after witnessing the tireless and heroic efforts of the animal rescuers in New Orleans after Katrina, now donates a portion of her sales and fees to the MuttShack Animal Rescue Foundation.
Nanette's work has been exhibited in the San Diego Natural History Museum; the Barona Cultural Center and Museum, Lakeside, CA; Texas A&M University; the Museum of Outdoor Arts, Englewood, CO; Regis University, Denver, CO; and the Art Institute of Colorado, Denver, CO.
